Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is a widely used network protocol designed for managing and monitoring devices on an Internet Protocol (IP) network. SNMP facilitates the exchange of information between network devices, such as routers, switches, and servers, and a central management system. The protocol operates on the client-server model, where network devices act as servers providing information, and a central management system functions as the client requesting and collecting data. SNMP allows network administrators to monitor the performance, health, and status of network devices in real-time. It employs a hierarchical structure known as the Management Information Base (MIB) to organize and represent data about each managed device. SNMP enables tasks such as performance monitoring, fault detection, and configuration management, making it a fundamental tool for network management and troubleshooting in IT environments.
