Denial of Service (DoS) in networking refers to a malicious attempt to disrupt the normal functioning of a computer system, network, or service by overwhelming it with a flood of illegitimate traffic. The goal of a DoS attack is to render the targeted network or service inaccessible to legitimate users, causing disruptions and potentially leading to downtime. Attackers may use various methods, such as flooding the network with traffic, exploiting vulnerabilities in software, or overwhelming specific services with requests. Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks involve multiple compromised devices, forming a botnet that amplifies the impact. Mitigating DoS attacks often involves implementing security measures, such as firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and content delivery networks, to filter and manage incoming traffic and ensure the continued availability and reliability of network services.
